You architect a book around what you deliberately leave out. The reader's imagination rushes into the gap — and whatever a reader builds for themselves, they cannot forget.
Explicitness hands the reader a finished object to consume and throw away. Negative space makes the reader a co-author — and co-authored emotion is the stickiest emotion there is. That is the whole secret, and this is the only doctrine that names it, maps it, and hands you the controls.
Each engine withholds one thing. Aim the absence, and you choose exactly where the reader breaks open. Run two at once and the charge compounds into a book people press into a friend's hands.
The book is a delay. Not will they — how long can we hold the not-yet. Place the release at 90–95%, or cut it entirely.

Put the lovers on opposite sides of something uncrossable. The border is the architecture; the story only pressure-tests the membrane. Define the line first — before plot, before character.

Exile is the ultimate Two-Worlds Spine. The homeland you cannot return to; the country you are not fully of. Việt Kiều longing is structurally identical to erotic longing — the same ache across the same membrane. Duras reached for it from the outside. We write it from within.
One recurring physical thing absorbs the desire the characters can't voice. Its changing state tracks the whole arc. Plant it in the first ten pages.

Narrate from the far side of loss. Desire remembered outburns desire happening, because grief is already baked in. This is the return movement of the Gift Engine — run them together and the last chapter does double work.
